Abstract

The distribution of black‐pigmented Bacteroides species among 468 isolates from human subgingival dental plaque and feces from 20 adults selected from periodontally healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis groups is reported. Bacteroides intermedius was detected in all dental plaque samples. Bacteroides gingivalis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Bacteroides loescheii were isolated from 8, 3 and 2 dental plaques, respectively. Bacteroides denticola and Bacteroides levii were each detected in one dental plaque. Only 3 fecal samples contained black‐pigmented Bacteroides, identified as Bacteroides carporis, with a frequency ranging from 0.001 to 0.06% of total colonies on non‐selective blood agar plates.
