Abstract

Beginning from the 1890′s, all perspective work on terminologies in the field of natural sciences was made in Galicia, which was home to two main groups that differed in their attitude toward the composition of the Ukrainian literary language, particularly on the formation of Ukrainian terminologies: the west-Ukrainian Russophiles favoured the use of a standard language heavily influenced by Russian and Church-Slavic elements, while the Ukrainophiles undertook attempts to create a modern Ukrainian (“Ruthenian”) language, prevalently on the basis of the folk language. This study, which is based on examples of relevant publications, demonstrates how the work upon the Ukrainian chemical terminology indeed began. A detailed analysis of the language of these publications – its morphology, grammar and lexical base – reflects the will of scientists and philologists to create the Galician variant of the Modern Ukrainian Standard Language and shows how heterogeneous and complex this variant of the Ukrainian Language was.
