Abstract
Numerical integration of the gasdynamic equations describing the coupling between vibrational relaxation and dissociation for a hydrogen–helium mixture in a plane shock wave shows that the total entropy is a completely monotonic function of time; this is found to be the case whether the system is considered to be isolated, or whether there is loss of energy or mass from the flow.
