Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart; allgemeine Enzyklopadie der Musik, unter Mitarbeit zahlreicher Musikforscher des Inund Auslandes, herausgeben von Friedrich Blume. Kassel & Basel: Barenreiter-Verlag, 1949-1968. 14 vols. Commentary relative to problems of planning, compilation and production of MGG will be found in an article by the Editor, Friedrich Blume: Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart: A Postlude, NOTES 24(2):217-44, December 1967. This also appears in Nachwort des Herausgebers at the end of the final volume of MGG, followed by Karl Votterle's Nachwort des Verlegers. Future plans for MGG include an index as well as a supplement. The Editor has indicated that he will welcome suggestions for the supplementary issue, which will contain articles on ethnomusicology not appearing in the main volumes. Each entry in this listing is followed by references to volume and column numbers in MGG, illustrative materials (symbols: B=bibliography; C=charts and/or maps; I=illustration; M=music examples; T=music examples with text), and the author of the article. In section V., numerals and letters given at the end of the entry refer to articles cited in this listing.
