Abstract
This symposium explores the emerging phenomenon of entrepreneurial pivoting. Whereas pivoting is widespread among entrepreneurs and the business press, scholars are only starting to devote attention to it, leading to limited understanding about this important phenomenon. This symposium intends to shed light on pivoting to enable rigorous theorizing of this fundamental process. To this end, the Symposium brings together leading scholars who will reflect on pivoting from different perspectives (identity, strategic change, framing, strategic reorientation, and dynamic adaptation) and explore its implications for key organizational domains (technology ventures, cleantech and energy firms, social enterprise). The Symposium intends to spur research on this important phenomenon by offering multiple perspectives on it and identifying research opportunities. Containing an introduction to pivoting, insights from panelists, discussant comments, and a Q&A, this Symposium intends to provide participants with an understanding of the phenomenon, key theoretical approaches to it, and fruitful perspectives for future research.
