Abstract

History and fiction are associated since the homeric epopee. Aristotelesdifferentiated the “poet” from the “historian”, but the distinction is notsatisfactory nowadays, regardind the modifications occurred in these twodiscursive modalities. The historical novel of the 19th century also mixes historicsubjects and pure invention, replacing the theoretical problem of the limitsbetween history and fiction. Modernity contests the “classic” model of historicalnovel, romantic, especially as for the triunphing and temporal distance of theSIGNÓTICA: 13: 11-26, jan./dez. 2001 25narrator. This article tries to make a typification of the peculiarities of thehistorical fiction.

Ciente de estar introduzindo o leitor num mundo diferente, o narrador do romance histórico clássico, isto é, romântico, adotava uma perspectiva externa, não apenas em relação ao espaço físico e às personagens, mas também em relação ao tempo, não hesitando em marcar de modo ostensivo seu distanciamento temporal quanto à matéria narrada.
