Abstract

The history of Physical Education between 1940 and 1950 at the Colegio Estadual do Espirito Santo is provided and analyzed. Strategy and tactic concepts, representation struggles and evidentiary paradigm are employed to investigate the practices developed. Current research investigates the historical files of the school and those of the Higher Education Institution for Physical Education in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. During the above-mentioned period, Physical Education in schools progressively became more related to sports rather than to gymnastics. Research also identifies changes in what was considered a discipline, or rather, when practices were coupled to the teaching of sports, other meanings were introduced to the concept of school Physical Education.
