Abstract

For a long time, ankle sprains were confused with epiphyseal fractures of fibula and their existence was denied. Nowadays, a significant growth of that pathology is observed : therefore ankle sprains occupies a major place in the traumatic pathology of children and teenagers. Prognosis is usually favourable if an adapted initial therapy is applied including casts, reeducation (if necessary) and orthopedic insoles. At the moment, the classical presentation of this pathology is modified by sociocultural events (precocious and intensive sports fencing) and by changes in the children’s body (increasing in size and obesity). In that conditions, the ankle sprain’s prognosis is worse and surgery is frequently required. Surgical approach with specific indications is discussed ; operatory techniques appropriated to children are described.
