Abstract
1. A study was made of the enthalpy of formation of the nitrogen solid solution in zirconium and of zirconium nitride within their homogeneity regions. It was established that the enthalpy of formation changes linearly within the homogeneity region of each phase. 2. The fact that nitrogen content within the homogeneity region of each phase affects the rate of change in enthalpy of formation is ascribed to differences in the character of chemical binding. This manifests itself also in differences in the chemical properties of the nitrogen solid solution in zirconium and zirconium nitride in their homogeneity regions.
