Abstract
The purpose of this study was first to examine the changes in use of organic and inorganic design systems for entertainment and communications technology in the home from 1918 through 1987. Comparisons were then made between these results and the changes in the sociolcultural factors of furnishing styles, equipment saturations, and attitudes towards technology. A content analysis of House and Garden magazines from 1918 to 1987 was used to carry out this reserch. Changes in style mix of technology and room furnishings, seating arrangements, and concealment of the technology were analyzed. The research indicated that both organic and inorganic systems were simultaneously in use during the 70–year period, but the emphasis became more organic by 1987. Organic and inorganic system scores were influenced largely by changes in furnishing styles and equipment saturation. Suggestions are given for ways to include organic and inorganic design solutions in interior design classes.
