Abstract

SUMMARY The TEMPUS project, JEP 1277: ‘Development of language training capacities appropriate to the educational and economic development of West Bohemia’, had two main objectives: ‐‐ to meet the immediate needs for better language training of both students and staff ‐‐ to design and implement a system of language teaching that would guarantee long‐lasting, clearly defined, levels of language proficiency. In spite of a number of drawbacks and obstacles these two main objectives were achieved. Of even greater importance for the development of Czech higher education were some not originally anticipated by‐products of the project: the establishment of a network of universities eager to cooperate even after the project ended, experience of credit transfer between Czech and foreign institutions and the development of a professional international office at the University of West Bohemia modelled on similar offices abroad.
