Abstract
Background: The intestinal microbiome participates in numerous mucosal processes with previous work demonstrating intestinal mucosal growth in gnotobiotic mice. Others have suggested that certain indigenous gut bacteria are capable of stimulating host serotonin synthesis. Furthermore, potentiation of serotonin signaling has been shown to enhance small intestinal mucosal growth in mice.
