Abstract
Hospitality is one of the human actions full of meaning. From ancient times until today, it has grown in importance in modern times as a concept. The Literature has always portrayed it: many and many writers have depicted the human hospitality, both concrete and metaphorical, and its contrary, the inhospitality. The poem entitled La Carestia, written by the 18th-century Sicilian poet Domenico Tempio, underlines the social conflict between the aristocrats and the poorest. The former despise the impolite and ignorant people, and mock them; the latter perceive such an attitude and react with resentment. No hospitality, no human solidarity, no acceptance are possible in the society: Catania doesn’t change and it is rife with separation and distance.
