Abstract

This chapter investigates the work done by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa (SA) since its inception towards creating an inclusive post-school education and training (PSET) sector, with a specific focus and emphasis on the development of inclusive education in the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges as the area of investigation. The authors considered various policies, legislations, and strategies responding to the ratified United Nations (UN) conventions, declarations, treaties, and agreements in the country. Strategies for improving inclusive TVET colleges, their implementation, and the challenges associated with them were identified. The authors proposed strategies to improve the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the TVET sector. Moreover, the authors recommended future research avenues to understand barriers to inclusion.
