Abstract

Radioactive tracers were used to show that the ratio of sulphate to sodium in spray exceeds that in sea water by 10 to 30%. A much greater enrichment occurred for iron. The enrichment of sulphate is sufficient to account for some observations of excess sulphate in rain in clean air in mid ocean, but does not explain the larger excess observed in westerly air streams over Scandinavia.
