Abstract

An experiment was made on the enrichment of light sulfur isotopes at the boundary of adsorption of SO2 from a solution on an anion exchanger column. Seven columns filled with Dowex 2-x10 in acetate form were connected in series and SO2 pre-enriched in S32 absorbed on the columns. The SO2 band was displaced with 0.3 M HCl, and after a travel of 116.5 m in 43 days, the band was divided into 8 samples for S isotopic analysis. The S34/S32 separation factor between the band ends was found to be 20.3, corresponding to 471 theoretical plates. Four samples of the acetic acid effluent in front of the SO2 band were also taken after 31 m travel for investigating the isotopic enrichment between acetic acid and acetate ion. The results show that the carboxyl of the acetic acid in solution is enriched in C13 by the factor 1.0016 and in O18 by the factor 1.0036.
