Abstract

Abstract Ennodius, Ep. 6,9 is an enquiry addressed to a high politician Faustus Niger, in order to help an anonymous bishop in trouble. We do not have any other further information about it. This article developed a hypothesis that the anonymous bishop may be the bishop of Aosta, Northern Italy, accused of proditio patriae, according to Cassiodorus, Var. 1,9. However, on the contrary of other bishops, accused of such a serious crime, who were usually exiled, the above mentioned bishop of Aosta is considered as innocent by Theodoric the Great. This could be because of the help of Faustus Niger, mentioned in the Ep. 6,9. In this case, we see how a clerk intervenes in a political affair and the collaboration of an ecclesiastical member and a government official of high rank.
