Abstract

Use of smartphones by employees of higher educational institutions has been a universal fact in current time. It is an absolute device of an adult’s daily routines and is now the most accepted communication form. Indeed, the Smartphone has turned from a scientific tool to a social platform. The mobile phone usage by the employees in higher educational institutions may link by some people as a distraction, which might reduce productivity at work. Some also may be of the view that the usage of smartphone improves communication across and as such impact increases productivity. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the employee’s mobile phone usage dependency and its impact on their outputs, bring out the degree of employee connect at their work place in the universities. The objective here is finding the relation between smartphone usage and employee productivity, this involves data collation based on description of the phone usage trend such as frequency of internet browsing, information seen/searched, web pages viewed and evaluating the effects of smartphones on employee’s academic related activities. The time spent on the mobile devices by employees in institutions were also compared with one another focusing on employee engagement and their performance sentiment respectively. The conclusion of this study indicates towards the need to evaluate and acknowledge the instructional usage of mobile devices in higher educational institution’s employee’s engagement and their performances.
