Abstract

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is currently the most widespread phonetic symbol system. It has been widely discussed whether primary school teacher should use phonetic symbols to teach vocabulary pronunciation. Based on the previous studies on IPA teaching and characteristics of learners’ background, it is suggested that IPA should be taught to primary school students at grade 5-6 in mainland China. The teaching of IPA can improve their English vocabulary performance in terms of correcting vocabulary pronunciation and better using vocabulary learning strategy.
