Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study investigates the impact of a Conventional Heat Treatment (CHT) and a Modified Heat Treatment (MHT) method that incorporates a deep cryogenic treatment in the process, on the mechanical properties, the microstructure of samples, and the lifespan of forging dies. The samples treated with the modified heat treatment showed less variation in elongation at similar strengths. The addition of deep cryogenic treatment in the heat treatment process increased the volume of fine, uniformly distributed carbides, enhancing secondary hardening compared to conventional methods. This treatment, followed by tempering, improved the die's service life and resulted in moderately higher impact toughness. The average lath length and width were reduced with modified heat treatment when observed after the second tempering. The wear of the forging die was reduced with modified heat treatment, and the service life was increased.
