Since 2001, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has emphasized the use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in substance abuse and mental health treatments. This emphasis represents a departure from usual addiction treatments, wherein the implementation of research to practice has lagged. It follows that we need a workforce with the capability to participate in research utilization. However, this is a problem uncovered in the article by Kerwin, Walker-Smith, and Kirby (2006).
