Abstract

The Joint Commission recognized that there are 600–1,600 newborns in the United States who experience an inhospital fall every year. Newborn falls can escalate into conditions of serious harm to the neonate as well as emotional distress to parents and caregivers. Safety actions should be considered to prevent newborn falls. The need for education of staff and parents was evident in our facility because of an increase in observations of unsafe sleep practices such as cosleeping or newborns being propped up on pillows.
