Abstract

The Olathe North Biotechnology project is a science initiative undertaken by the Kansas State University Olathe Innovation campus in conjunction with Olathe North High School to give high school students and teachers first hand experience with authentic laboratory research. Students are co‐mentored by University researchers and high school teachers to conduct experiments in the high school classroom. The program aims to increase student interest in science and technology, and to further the recruitment of students to the universities who support such initiatives. Teaching and coaching of high school students in scientific inquiry, experimental design, laboratory techniques, good laboratory practices, and presentation of results are also expected to enhance the abilities of university faculty and staff to communicate scientific principles to a wider public audience. Challenges and opportunities encountered in the course of this pilot program will be discussed.
