Abstract

The oxide ceramic coating for improving the corrosion of magnesium alloy remains challenging especially generated embrittlement cracking of the coating. A remarkable ameliorating embrittlement cracking behavior has been observed in this contribution on our developed yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ)/MgO repaired ceramic coating. It is related to stabilized specially oriented YSTZ grains affected by the (101) t-ZrO2 // (101) Y2O3 coherent interface and (101) YSTZ // (111) MgO semi-coherent interface continuous dislocation pinning. The high-quality repaired ceramic coating has few cracks after 48 h of immersion, which is expected to be beneficial to providing a suitable long-term protection to magnesium alloy.
