Abstract

We present systematic time-resolved investigations of plasma conditions for achieving the maximum cutoff and maximum conversion efficiency of high-order harmonic generation from gold plasma within the plateau. We analyzed harmonic generation under different laser-plasma conditions. We also performed simulations to calculate the ionization state of the gold plasma, the free electron density, and singly charged ion density at different prepulse intensities. By optimizing the plasma conditions, we observed a harmonic cutoff at the 53rd order (λ=15.09nm). We estimate the conversion efficiency of the harmonics within the plateau region to be 2×10−6.
