Abstract

This study focused on the effect of graphene oxide (GO) nanofillers on the sol-gel based silane coating corrosion protection performance enhancement. A mixture of tethyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) silane precursors was used for preparation of composite matrix. The GO nanosheets were functionalized by 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES, AGO nanofillers) and 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TEPI, IGO nanofillers) silanes to improve their compatibility with the silane matrix. The corrosion protection performance of the coatings was investigated by salt spray and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was found that AGO and IGO nanofillers improved the corrosion resistance of the coating due to better compatibility with silane matrix and excellent barrier properties. Also with increasing the amount of nanofiller from 0.2 to 0.4 g/L, the corrosion protection performance of the nanocomposite coatings decreased.
