Abstract

Abstract The prismatic bars of Al-4.5%Mg alloy shielded with and without copper sheets are processed by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) and investigated the effect of casing on its structure and mechanical behaviour. The ductile nature of Cu shielding reduces the required amount of pressing force significantly and develops the defect free homogeneous ultrafine grain (HUFG) structure in the covered billets. The uniform distribution of strain imposed on the billets strongly influenced the structure and mechanical properties. The micro-hardness and tensile strength of the alloy shielded with Cu increased by 152% and 46% respectively with less reduction in % elongation.
