Abstract
Flow visualization experiments with stripped dye markings show that the vortices in the wake of an impulsively started circular cylinder initially form with random phase along the span. In successive vortex generations, small perturbations disappear within a few cycles, and the eddies align parallel to the cylinder. The spanwise coherence is enhanced if vortex shedding is initiated by trigger plates.
