Abstract

The behavior of expansive clays in the form of shrinkage and swelling caused by changes in moisture content is frequently expressed superficially as settlement and heaving of lightly loaded geotechnical structures such as roadways, pavements, railways, foundations and channels or linings of reservoir. Research studies has been carried out previously in various parts of the world to find out economical and efficient ways and means of using cement kiln dust (CD) and lime (L) individually in various applications like soil stabilization. This research dealt with stabilization of an expansive high plastic soil using cement kiln dust (CD) with lime (L) to reduce their swelling and improve their geotechnical properties. The swelling potential is 1% measured from free swell odometer test. In this study, the tests results such as compaction, Atterberg limits, swelling potential, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength obtained on expansive clays mixed at different proportions of cement kiln dust-lime are presented and discussed. The results indicates that swelling potential decreased from 19% to 2% by adding (16% CD + 6% L) and the highest value for CBR is obtained by adding (16% CD + 9% L) as these percentages improved the CBR from 5.45 to 35.95.
