Abstract

The lethal effect of small doses of diphtheria toxin, injected subcutaneously into guinea-pigs, is greatly enhanced by the addition of certain adjuvants, such as heat-killed diphtheria bacilli, coli bacilli or red-blood cells. Toxin activation takes place only when toxin and adjuvant are injected at the same site simultaneously, or when the injection of the adjuvant preceeds the toxin injection for 24 hours.
