Abstract

This paper presents variational and partial differential equation(PDE)-based enhancement of degraded document images. The stain and uneven illumination degradation is mitigated via augmented Homomorphic L1 Total Variation estimation. Furthermore, a fourth order forward-backward Diffusion-Laplacian contrast enhancement PDE is used to restore faint text intensity and edges. Additionally, pre-smoothing is used for document images with extensive bleed-through effects with strong edges. Comparisons with existing approaches show improved/superior binarization results based on subjective and objective analysis
