Abstract

Open-cell aluminum foams with large pore size (4.41 mm), large pore opening size (1.45 mm) and low thickness (10 mm) exhibit unsatisfied sound absorption characteristic in the low-middle frequency range. To improve this characteristic, novel aluminum-polyurethane interpenetrating phase composite foams (Al/PU IPC foams) were successfully prepared by producing polyurethane foams in the internal cavities of open-cell aluminum foams. The sound absorption coefficient of the Al/PU IPC foams is above 0.3 in the frequency range of 670–1600 Hz and shows a maximum value of 0.67 at about 1150 Hz, which is ∼ 10 times higher than that of the open-cell Al foams with equal thickness, attributing to the small pore size, fine pore opening size and high sound absorption characteristics of internal polyurethane foams.
