Abstract
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a standardized, multimodal, and multidisciplinary team approach to the perioperative care of the surgical patient. It is an evidence-based and data-driven program that incorporates preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative steps for success. ERAS programs have achieved significantly improved outcomes by decreasing length of stay, readmissions, and opioid use following general surgery, OB/GYN, and orthopedic procedures. While protocols may be in development, no such protocols have been published in regards to the maxillofacial trauma patient. Our objective is to provide recommendations for optimal care of the maxillofacial trauma patient by adopting an ERAS protocol for optimization of nutritional, fluid, pain, and mobilization parameters leading to improved patient satisfaction.
