Abstract
This letter introduces enhanced phase shift keying Long Range (ePSK-LoRa) as an alternative to classical modulation approaches for low power wide area networks. By employing different combinations of phase and frequency shifts of the orthogonal chirp and using signal averaging, ePSK-LoRa achieves higher energy efficiency and higher spectral efficiency (SE) relative to the state-of-the-art schemes. Besides comprehensively elucidating the orthogonality of the transmitted symbols, we present maximum likelihood and absolute value detectors. The simulation results depict that besides affording higher SE, ePSK-LoRa requires lower signal-to-noise ratio per bit for correct detection making it a viable alternative to the classical approaches.
