Abstract

Abstract The photocatalytic properties of the organic-inorganic layered ZnS(en) 0.5 heterostructure (hybrid) and ZnS were investigated in the photoreduction of Cr(VI) at different pH conditions in the presence of citric acid. The structural and optical properties of the hybrid semiconductor were characterized by XRD, FTIR, UV–vis spectroscopies and TG–DTA thermal analysis. The ZnS(en) 0.5 hybrid semiconductor presented the highest photocatalytic reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) at low pH. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the hybrid semiconductor was ascribed to an increased electron transfer process by the presence of ethylenediamine (EN) in the structural ZnS layer.
