Abstract

The optical properties of neodymium and copper co-doped phosphate glass were examined focusing on the impact of Cu nanoparticles (NPs) with distinct plasmonic properties on the Nd3+ near-infrared (NIR) emission. The glasses were synthesized with either merely plasmonic or plasmonic & dichroic (transmitting blue, scattering red) character. While the merely plasmonic glass exhibited Nd3+ photoluminescence (PL) quenching consistently, the dichroic glass showed an enhanced NIR emission for excitation at 747 and 803 nm. The Nd3+ 4F3/2 emitting state decay times were however similar to the melt-quenched precursor. Scattering effects from Cu NPs are suggested to produce the PL boost.
