Abstract

The conflict between strength and toughness of Mg matrix composites extremely limits its engineering application. Inspired by nacre, CNTs/Mg bionic laminated composites were prepared by electrophoretic deposition. Compared with Mg, the yield strength and elongation of the laminated composite was increased by 52% and 59% respectively. CNTs/Mg laminated structure intercepts dislocations between layers. Compared with homogeneous composites, the stacked dislocations produce higher back stress strengthening. In the meantime, the isolation effect of CNTs layer makes the plastic deformation more uniform which delays the happening of necking. During the failure stage, the laminated structure has higher tolerance to cracks and delays the propagation of cracks. Overall, the toughness is improved by improving the plastic deformability and delaying crack propagation.
