Abstract

Discontinuous distributed TiB whiskers reinforced TA15 titanium alloy (TiBw/TA15) is a potential high-temperature structural material but has poor oxidation resistance. In this paper, an aluminide coating was prepared by pack cementation to enhance the oxidation resistance of TiBw/TA15 at 800 °C. The influences of TiBw on the formation mechanism of the aluminide coating were revealed by density functional theory. The oxidation resistance mechanism of the aluminide coating was investigated by experimental and theoretical methods at both macroscopic and atomic levels. The good oxidation resistance was mainly attributed to the dense and continuous Al2O3 layer formed by the TiAl3 phase, which effectively prevented the diffusion of oxygen to the substrate.
