Abstract

Optimization of the properties of TiAlN coatings can be obtained by incorporation of the fourth elements. Here, the effect of noble metal Ru-addition on the structure and mechanical properties of TiAlN were studied by correlative experimental and theoretical means. Ab initio calculations indicate that Ru-addition decreases the solubility limit of AlN in TiAlN, which is verified by the experimental results. Additionally, the alloying with Ru into TiAlN tailors the thermal decomposition path into TiRuN and AlN and leads to a stronger age-hardening ability due to the larger mismatch.
