Abstract

Barium (Ba) doping at Bismuth (Bi) site was reported to enhance magnetic properties of Bismuth Ferrite while Yttrium (Y) doping was found to improve electrical properties. Nanostructural forms are also desirable for enhanced ferroelectric, dielectric and magnetic behaviour. To investigate the combined effect of Ba and Y co-doping on nanostructural forms, Ba0.1Bi0.9-xYxFeO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1) nanoparticles are synthesized using tartaric acid modified sol-gel method and their electric and magnetic properties are studied in detail. Enhanced polarization is observed for x = 0.03 and 0.05 with lowest leakage (∼ 10−6 A/cm2) reported for x = 0.03 at an applied field of 43 kV/cm. Both dielectric and magnetodielectric properties have significantly enhanced in all co-doped samples while the linear relationship between square of magnetization and magnetodielectric factor proves the presence of magnetoelectric coupling. This work reports achievement of simultaneous existence of significant ferroelectric, dielectric and magnetic properties making it a promising material for possible applications.
