Abstract

Adjuvant arthritic rats received either hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) alone, prednisone (PR) alone, both drugs, or vehicle. HCT combined with PR enhanced the extent of hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and elevation of serum urea concentration and glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity observed when either drug was given alone. These results suggest that administration of thiazide diuretics to treat edema encountered during anti-inflammatory steroid therapy may increase the risk of diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and certain thrombotic disorders. HCT did not reduce the anti-inflammatory activity of PR.
