Abstract

Accelerated tests at 150°C have shown that the creep performance of an experimental Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy and the commercial alloy 2024 in the underaged condition is superior to that in the fully hardened, T6 temper. In particular, the secondary creep rate is significantly reduced if these alloys are underaged. Microstructural changes occurring during creep of the Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy suggest that this behavior is a consequence of enhanced dynamic precipitation resulting from the presence of excess residual solute which is available in this condition.
