Abstract

Abstract To improve the adhesion between polymer matrix and metal plating films, PET surface was modified with F 2 gas at 25 ℃ and 10–760 Torr for 1 h. The surface of fluorinated PET became markedly clouded after ethanol washing. The surface roughness (Ra ) of fluorinated and washed sample was about 5 times larger than that (5.2 nm) of untreated sample. Also the water contact angle of fluorinated and washed sample decreased to 55°. The adhesion strength of Ni metal deposited on PET substrate could be enhanced by the surface fluorination and washing processes due to the increased roughness and hydrophilic surface of PET. Consequently, the ASTM class of adhesion between fluorinated PET and Ni plating film could be evaluated to 5 B.
