Abstract

Tm3+ doped and Tm3+,Pr3+ co-doped PbF2 single crystals with high quality were grown by Temperature Gradient Technique (TGT). The absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and lifetimes were investigated at room temperature. The absorption transition of Tm3+:3H6→3H4 matches well with the pumping source of the AlGaAs laser diode. The 1.5 μm emission intensity originating from Tm3+: 3H4→3F4 transition was enhanced significantly by co-doping Pr3+ ions. The energy transfer efficiency from the Tm3+: 3F4 level to the Pr3+: 3F2 level is as high as 90.2%, indicating that the Pr3+ ion is an effective deactivate ion for enhancing the ∼1.5 μm emission in Tm,Pr:PbF2 crystal. The results indicated that Tm,Pr:PbF2 crystal would be the promising candidate for 1.5 μm laser output.
