Summary

Introduction

Drugs have been an integral part of sport in the world for two to three millennia[1]. The most publicised group of steroid users is that comprising of competitive athletes performing under the rules enforced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its close companion, World AntiDoping Agency (WADA). The fourth and second placegetters had tested positive for steroids in the year prior to the Games and should have been banned from the Games but the United States authorities excused them on specious grounds.
