Abstract

A rare case of an adult suffering with potts spine and a huge retropharyngeal cold abscess completely obstructing the upper airway and larynx, causing respiratory distress is presented as an acute emergency. An urgent tracheostomy to safeguard the airway was required. The clinical features, surgical anatomy, aetiopathogenesis and management of a retropharyngeal abscess are discussed.
