Abstract

This issue of ELQ is the first for new editor Oona Abrams. “Cultivating Creativity” is an issue intended to inspire all English leaders to try something new as their school years begin. In the spirit of the topic, each contributor has a unique voice and noble pursuits. Valerie Mattessich takes us into the “real world” of her AP language classroom, where her students launch advertising campaigns for local businesses. Limarys Caraballo and Meredith Hill discuss their experiences working with urban youth to ignite meaningful learning experiences. Kate Baker takes us into the virtual world of gamification and its impact on the variety of learners in her classes. Matthew Morone offers a compelling argument and an engaging method for more meaningful student presentations. Finally, both real and virtual worlds meet in Christina McCabe’s website project, in which McCabe’s students utilize Chromebooks to present their local and global audience with social justice topics of their choosing.
