Abstract

English language proficiency tells how well students use English as second language. This study measured the language proficiency of the Senior High School students of Visayas State University. The researcher adopted a test from International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The test determines the students’ proficiency in English language in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Scores in each skill are evaluated using the method also adopted from IELTS. Results show that students varied in their proficiency level in using the English language. Overall results based on the mean scores show that students are competent in listening and good in reading, speaking and writing. Although English is not the native language in the country, Senior High School students of the Visayas State University use English language well in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students can communicate and express ideas using the English language. Taking a proficiency test to determine one’s level in language proficiency would be a good start if students really do want to improve their proficiency in using the English language.
