Abstract

The study investigates how English language teachers view varieties of English accents used by their students from expanding-circle countries. The study took place at an international university in Bangkok, where English is used as a major medium of instruction and international communication. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview revealed that teacher participants had no negation and objection towards their students’ accents. The findings further indicate that mutual intelligibility and successful communication are prioritized as well as strong preference for native English varieties for being pedagogical models.
