Abstract

A recently published doctoral thesis records dialogues and free conversations about political and economic topics in the Tigrinya language. These texts allow for the first time studying the use and adoption and integration of English and Amharic words and phrases in Tigrinya academic texts. The integration of English verbs into the syntactic system of Tigrinya is a process reminiscent of the method of formation found in Turkish and Persian. More serious consequences entail for the Tigrinya nominal syntax through the adoption of English and Amharic nominal expressions in which the nomen rectum precedes the nomen regens. This is different in Tigrinya as well as in Old Ethiopic (cf. nəguśä-nägäśt, ‘King of Kings‘).
